Supplemental Security Income

SSI Lawyers

What is Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program that pays monthly benefits to people who are disabled, blind or over the age of 65 with limited income and resources. Children with disabilities may also qualify SSI.

Unlike Social Security Disability benefits, SSI benefits are not based on work history. The funds for SSI come from general tax revenues, and not Social Security taxes.

If you’re eligible for SSI, you’ll also most likely be eligible for Medicaid and food assistance, as well. Medicaid helps you pay for doctors’ bill, prescriptions, hospital stays and other health costs.

At Solomon, Sullivan and Romo, our SSI lawyers can help you apply for SSI benefits or appeal for benefits if you were denied. Our SSI lawyers help people in Florida and Georgia win SSI benefits.

Am I Eligible for SSI?

If you are

  • over the age of 65;
  • blind; or
  • disabled.

And:

  • have limited income
  • have limited resources
  • apply for any other cash benefits or payments and are deemed eligible, (for example, pensions, Social Security benefits)
  • file an application for SSI.

Qualifying for Childhood SSI

Children (anyone under 18) with disabilities qualify if diagnosed with a physical or mental condition that is expected to last for a period of no less than one full year or result in death.

If you think you may be eligible for SSI benefits or any other disability benefits – or if your child is eligible for SSI – contact the Tallahassee SSI lawyers at Solomon, Sullivan and Romo today.

What is the Difference In SSI and Social Security Disability (SSD) Benefits?

For SSI, if you haven’t paid enough money into the Social Security system to qualify for benefits, you might be eligible. The government will review your income and determine what resources are available to you.

SSD is available to you if you suffer from a physical or mental condition that is expected to keep you out of work for at least one full year. You can only qualify for SSD if you have worked long enough and paid enough Social Security taxes.

The disability attorneys at Solomon, Sullivan and Romo can help you apply for SSD andSSI benefits. We can also help you appeal if you were denied by the government. If you have questions about SSD or SSI benefits, call us today at 850-385-6668 or fill out our contact form. We’ll start you off with a free consultation.
